I’m extremely romantic and soulful: Akhil
Akhil Sachdeva first came into the limelight when his song, Humsafar (Badrinath Ki Dulhania; 2017) became a rage. The song today has almost 200 million views on YouTube and proved to be Akhil’s big ticket to stardom. He then went on to sing hits such as Nain Na Jodeen (Badhaai Ho; 2018), Tera Ban Jaunga (Kabir Singh; 2019) and a few songs for the T-Series mixtapes. His latest song in Vicky Kaushal’s new film, titled Channa Ve, is a romantic number and the singer says that this song is special for him because it is sung as well as composed by him. “It was a challenge but I think I have done a decent job,” he says, adding, “People associate me with romance, be it sadness, breakups, or love. I don’t know how the romance genre, overall, has not been explored but I feel, it’s a genre for me and I am a romantic person at heart. I am extremely romantic and soulful. I love exploring this genre because it has different variants to it,” he says.
Akhil, who has also sung a single called Gal Sun, says that he is an “old soul who relates to the older generation much better” than he does to this generation. “Our previous generation was all about the souls where melody was the king, and simplicity and simple writing were the major winners. So yes, romance is my genre and the best part is that it is such a huge genre because love itself, as an emotion, is deep like the sea. There is so much to it, and I am glad that people say this genre is very ‘me’,” says Akhil.
Before becoming a Bollywood singer, Akhil used to be part of a band called Nasha. So, he has been associated with music professionally for over a decade. “It’s been 10 years since I have been singing as a professional singer, composer or a songwriter. It is my 11th year since I started India’s first sufi rock band Nasha. Bollywood happened later but my music career is spanning over 10 years. I don’t have too many expectations but the only thing that is consistent with me is my purity, innocence and simplicity. I do everything from my heart. I am hungry for love and that’s why I deliver so much in return,” says Akhil.
The singer believes that the music industry is currently going through a great phase. “I think new talents are being given chances and fresh voices, musicians and composers are coming up and getting their dues. So, I think it’s an absolutely amazing time to be in the industry and explore it,” he signs off.
