Performances that stood out in commercially unsuccessful films
Kartik Aaryan’s last release, Love Aaj Kal, didn’t manage to set the box office coffers ringing but it definitely earned him some favourable reviews for his performance. In the past, we have seen many actors including the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor who have delivered a good performance in a film but did not catch the fancy of the audience.
Trade analyst Joginder Tuteja feels that the Kartik’s performance will surely be appreciated in posterity. "Kartik came up with a mature act that needed him to go against the tide. It is not uncommon for some performances to live on and stand the test of time as it has happened to the best of the talent and the youngest of the tribe as well. In times to come, he will get the right acknowledgment for the effort that he has put in Love Aaj Kal,” he says.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh believes that Kartik has proved his acting abilities. “He had to portray two different characters, which was the difficult part, and I believe he excelled in both. Over the years, he has slowly gained popularity among the youth and also with the family audience,” he says adding, “As far as the box office is concerned, his previous releases have done really well and the opening day numbers of Love Aaj Kal were good, too. The overall collection might not be impressive but I believe Kartik did his job.”
Citing some instances from the past, Taran says, “Every actor wants to do different roles in his career. Lootera (2013) may have not worked, but Ranveer excelled in the film. It was a challenge for Ranveer as he worked in Gunday (2014) at the same time.” He further adds, “We also saw Ranbir experiment right at the start of his career with Rocket Singh: Salesman Of The Year (2009). He was flawless in the film. He could have played safe but he took the risk of taking up a film which he knew was not going to be commercially successful.”
Taran goes on to state, “Even Shah Rukh Khan’s Swades (2004) was a commercial failure but people have liked his performance. Be it Darr (1993), Bazigaar (1993) or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai(1998), he has proved his versatility time and again through his films and no one can say that he is getting typecast.”
