A fine tuning: Masterclasses for budding musicians of GIIS

It all started a few years back when singer-composer Shekhar Ravjiani visited the Global Indian International School (GIIS) in Singapore for a masterclass. After meeting the “talented and passionate young” students there, Atul Temurnikar, co-founder and chairman, GIIS, says that he remembers Ravjiani “wanting to do something which is more permanent in nature”. “After the first three masterclasses, this idea struck both of us. Shekhar wanted to do this for the children who have a passion for music. There is no commercial equation. We don’t charge anything to the students,” says Temurnikar. About how it all started, Ravjiani says, “I was always told by my teacher that you increase your knowledge when you teach. My connection with kids between the age of 16 to 24 began in 2007 when I started judging reality shows. I have mentored more than 300 kids now. When I went to GIIS, I came across some really good talents. The third masterclass sealed it for all of us. We composed the anthem of the school. At that point, Atul and I felt that it was the right moment to take the big step and start the GIIS Shekhar Ravjiani School of Music.”

The composer is conducting the classes online, and says that “apart from network issues, there are no other challenges”. He further adds, “Education should be enjoyed, and yes, it is important and so is the theory of music. However, [for music] you have to enjoy the process of singing and playing an instrument. We are more like a finishing school.”

Temurnikar points out that Ravjiani was kind enough to reschedule his timings according to the comfort of the students. “A few students asked, ‘should I give up my studies?’ We said, ‘no, we will help you’. Shekhar said that he will take the class when the kids are free. That speaks volumes about what he is trying to do in terms of contributing for these young kids,” says Temurnikar.

Talking about the process of the sessions, Ravjiani says, “I didn’t want to deviate from their genre of music. If a kid is singing Carnatic music, we would help him/her refine his/her vocal abilities. It’s a process of sharing my experience with them. I do exactly what my gurus have taught me.” Ask him if there is an added pressure on him, and he says, “No not at all. Neither Atul nor I guarantee that these kids will get an opportunity unless its organic. Right now, it is their time to learn and not to rush.”
