I was a grown-up woman to my family. They wanted me to act like a woman and get married at the earliest — it was frustrating. The torturous pressure nearly made me give up on life. Then, I chanced upon this social media post about a shelter for transgender persons. I escaped the toxic limits of my home to complete my education. I have found peace here, as nobody discriminates against me on the lines of my gender identity. It makes me proud that there are people out there thinking about us and our basic rights.

My parents noticed feminine traits in me. They, forcefully, sent me to a military college thinking I’d ‘turn’ masculine. I coped there, but during a medical test, they found out I was a transgender and sent me back home. My family locked me up in a room for four months. I was tortured and I even tried to commit suicide. I learnt about this shelter online. This place has restored my peace of mind. Now, I am excited to live my life. I believe, if you want the rainbow, you got to put up with the rain.

Since early childhood, I have been facing social stigma. I’d hear unhealthy, remarks from people — they’d say, “Your parents are educated and you’re receiving formal education too, why get involved with the transgender community?!” I was bullied. In Garima Greh, I found people like me. They have faced similar issues and that makes me feel comfortable. I have been accommodated in a safe space without any discrimination.
