Autism carnival to spread awareness

-

To help understand autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) — both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development, the Centre for Child and Adolescent Well Being (CCAW) is geared up for several awareness raising actions. One of its initiatives, An Autism Carnival: Celebrate Autism, which will take place today, aims to inculcate new perspectives that are easy for general public to understand.

Diverse educational activities such as special talent shows, art and craft, games, and much more, together with stalls focused on special education, speech and language therapies, will take place at the carnival. “Inculcating new perspectives which are far removed from medical jargon or medical conferences, and are more understandable to the public is the aim,” says Shreya Tandon, an associate psychologist working with ASD at CCAW.

The ‘carnival’ would also host various paediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, students and researchers in the field of Autism aiming to reach a new milestone in changing the way it is understood in India. Organisers say the event is set to open an expert panel for live discussion too. The artistic and creative side of children under ASD will be on display through paintings and artworks made by them as well.

The day-long event also has fancy dress competition and talent shows for ASD-affected kids. Around 150 students will be a part of the occasion. Desinger duo of Shantanu and Nikhil is scheduled to inaugurate the carnival.
