ITO isn’t about traffic now...

- VIDUSHI VERMA

It’s about the hottest new metro station in town, decked up in pretty purple fairy lights that steal the thunder from the distracting hoarding above and even the larger-than-life Gandhi at the Police headquarters nearby. Here’s taking you inside that Metro mandap.

The newly-opened ITO Metro Station, constructed under Phase III, falls on the Violet Line and connects commuters directly to the Blue Line and the Yellow Line. Followed by four stations — Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, Red Fort and Kashmere Gate — which have collectively been titled ‘Heritage Line’, the station is expected to take some surface traffic load off the ITO intersection.

For now, its silver interiors shine spotless, and the crowds are yet to throng it at the busiest hours. The passages are paved with lush green potted plants that lead commuters to the security check. There are two big exhibition panels that showcase the city’s history between the Supreme Court and the ruins of Feroz Shah Kotla — something that stays with you long after the ride is over. We hope, however, that it does not turn into a blind spot like the Metro museum at the Patel Chowk station, though.

We had heard that some swish little cafes were also part of the deal, but missed spotting any. As of now, it’s the bantawalas and holein-the-wall snack shops around the busy crossing that commuters will have to settle for. Nevertheless, it’s still worth a good selfie and a neat ride!
