Delhi girl Kamakshi is rocking the musical stage
Singer Kamakshi Khanna is making Dilli ki janta proud with her dulcet voice and performance on a TV show
Her interest in music began in school, and she would actively take part in choir competitions. Now, Kamakshi Khanna, an alumnus of Springdales School, is garnering applause on India’s first-ever homegrown English singing talent hunt on television, The Stage. The only Delhi girl on the platform, she is thrilled to be a part of the show and to see English music grabbing the spotlight amid Bollywood-dominated content on television.
“I was excited to hear that something like this is happening in India for English music, especially on TV, which is dominated by Bollywood-like content. It’s amazing to cater to an audience that prefers and appreciates English music,” says Khanna, who studied at Lady Shri Ram College for Women.
The 22-year-old feels blessed to have a chance to interact with “incredible” artists on the show, that’s being judged by the likes of musicians Vishal Dadlani, Monica Dogra and Ehsaan Noorani. “From participants to the judges, all of us appreciate and promote the western music scene. The judges have been very supportive and understand the impact a show like this will have,” says Khanna.
“I’m used to singing with my band and performing my music, but I haven’t ever sung covers on stage with a backing track or been judged for it. I’m loving the experience,” adds the singer, who has become a household name, winning praise not just on the show, but social media as well. “The support is overwhelming. People have started recognising me as an artist from live TV. Television really takes you to every household. I’m getting a lot of encouragement and criticism, and many have tweeted and sent me messages, saying that I’m their favourite. What else can an artist ask for!” says Khanna.
It’s amazing that there’s an audience that prefers and appreciates English music. I’m glad that we are now catering to that section of music lovers
