Cash crunch: Delhi brides rent lehengas online

First it was the shagun ka lifafa, now it’s Delhi’s wedding trousseaus that are bearing the brunt of demonetisation. The wedding season is here, but unlike earlier, when bridesto-be were able to spend hard cash on their favourite lehenga, this year their purse strings are a little tighter, forcing them to rent designer clothes.

Rental websites obviously have reason to cheer, since their sales have gone through the roof. And they believe this trend will gain more steam. “We were getting almost 50 clients every week, and the number has increased to 100 after demonetisation,” says Akshay Taneja, founder of RentACloset.com.

Sabena Puri, co-founder Stage3, says, “Now that people are short of hard cash, our customers have tripled in number.”

Kanika Dhingra, 26, who rented designerwear for her wedding, says, “It’s a great idea, especially after demonetisation. I was anyway not going to wear my wedding lehenga again. So I rented one to deal with the cash crunch.”

Nidhi Dhiman, who is getting married in January, adds: “I got the best of designerwear on rent for my wedding. The rates are also affordable. My parents and I were worried about my wedding trousseau shopping after demonetisation. Things are much more sorted now.”
