SRK says sense of humour is diluting in Bollywood

Actor Shah Rukh Khan agrees when his longtime friend, filmmaker Karan Johar says that celeb guests on the ongoing fifth season of his popular TV chat show, Koffee With Karan, are “wary” of opening up. On Wednesday, KJo was reported as saying: “Celebs are speaking less because they’re so aware that there is some ‘.com’ sitting on their heads, literally uploading and hanging on to every word they say.” The 44-year-old believes, “Not every word should be whacked or over-analysed… I don’t think anyone sitting on the couch means to offend anyone.”

Shah Rukh — who made his seventh appearance on the show, last month — wonders where the sense of humour has gone; says maybe that’s why the show isn’t as “free flying” as it was when it started in 2004. But it’s not like he isn’t fond of the show anymore. “It’s (still) brilliant... (But) Now, it’s a little held back,” says the 51-year-old.

Previous seasons of the show have seen stars spilling the beans on their love life, and addressing rumours and controversies in Bollywood.

“At this point, there’s no differentiating one media from another. You say a word — it can be reported in any way,” says Shah Rukh, who longs for things to be different. “I wish we had times when we could just have fun. The sense of humour is diluting.”

The actor, however, adds that KJo handles situations well. “He is aware that he, too, has to hold back. Even if you really screw up, he’d say this is something he’s not going to use on TV. He doesn’t do it for enticement or vulgar display of TRPs. He does it with dignity. It may not come across like that because we’re having fun but there’s an understanding among everyone.”

SRK also credits Karan for the show’s popularity. “He’s wonderful. He loves everyone who comes on his show and everybody loves him back. That comfort makes the show beautiful. Even if held back, it’s one of the most open shows because everybody loves each other,” he says.

You say a word — it can be reported in any way. So, everybody is wary... People take themselves too seriously. I wish we could just have fun SHAH RUKH KHAN, ACTOR
