‘The video isn’t bold, this kind of love is perfectly natural’
Actor and singer Anushka Manchanda and Monica Dogra’s latest musical video, Lay You Down, has become an internet sensation. With scenes of the two women making love, replete in the video, it is being touted as the boldest Indian musical video ever made. Speaking about why they decided to make a video that speaks of homosexual love, Manchanda says, “The video was an opportunity to tell a simple yet compelling story, and to create something beautiful. I took up the video because of the song and the idea of expressing gay love.”
Though viewers are calling it a bold attempt, Anushka doesn’t think the video has explicit content. She says, “I don’t think it is bold, I think it’s like my director says, ‘perfectly natural’. The video shows that love knows no boundaries. The spectrum of emotions you experience when you fall in love are absolutely real to you, irrespective of gender, religion or ethnicity Who are we to judge two people in love?”
Speaking about her on-screen chemistry with Monica, Anushka says, “We have seen each other growing up. We have a level of comfort and trust and I am very comfortable in my own skin. So there was no awkwardness during the shoot.”
The singer has also edited the video. She says, “The director took a leap of faith and asked me to edit this video, something I had never done before. It was a journey of self discovery and learning experiences for me.”
