Gandhi (right) has sung many hits in Bollywood such as Sau Tarah Ke (Dishoom), and The Break Up Song (Ae Dil Hain Mushkil). The 27-year-old likes singing songs which make her experiment with her voice.

“I don’t want my preferences to limit me. I’ve much to explore and I think, Bollywood is a great place to do just that. I’m generally open to everything when it comes to song selection. I, especially, enjoy taking on new characters for the songs I sing and I enjoy the process of trying new things with my voice,” she says.

Jonita admits that some of her songs haven’t been as successful as others sung but she doesn’t mind that, she says, “I have sung several songs that have not become hits! Some of those have been my most favourite songs! The anticipated success of a song has nothing to do with me agreeing to sing it.”

The singer wants to experiment and to try new things. “To me, being a playback singer is synonymous with being a versatile singer. I have been getting the opportunity to sing in various styles. I don’t want my preferences to limit me,” she explains.

However, playback singing is not the only thing on her mind, she wants to explore the non film music space as well. “I do think that a singer can become successful without having to depend on Bollywood. There’s definitely audience out there for nonfilm music. I have immense respect for musicians in the independent scene. I think it’s a great space to explore, even for Bollywood artists, since the limitations to your creativity are much less,” she adds.
