Isne meri bra utha ke unki balcony mein phenk di... uspe shayari bhi likh di’— This is a line from Kamala Nehru College’s theatre society Lakshya’s annual stage production ‘Shahira Ke Naam’. Reportedly, this line and “a few other words like ‘bra’ and ‘panty’ got Lakshya disqualified” from Mahavidyalaya Natya Samaroh, a theatre competition organised by Sahitya Kala Parishad, says says Radhika Dhawan, president of the society.

The incident has upset the students. Dhawan, says, “Ours is a play about six college girls who are making their own play in the story. While describing the life in a girls’ hostel and the pranks they play on each other, they talk about marking or numbering their underwear so that they don’t get mixed up. This scene among others is where we use ‘bra’ and panty’, which the judges apparently didn’t like.”

After their performance, they were reportedly told that they could use these words in a girls’ college but not at the fest. Monami Basu, convener of the society says, “You can’t impose your propriety and morals on the students. Would they have problems with ‘baniyan’? Judges had no problems with the lines like ‘ye tera bistar garam karegi’.” Basu also wrote a Facebook post and got support from people. However, Neha Sharma, the coordinator of the fest, says, “They haven’t been disqualified. They’ll only lose marks because they’ve broken rules over obscenity. They’ve used cuss words, too,” she says.

We thought the judges may have had a problem with the cuss words, a judge told us they were okay with words like ran** RADHIKA DHAWAN, STUDENT
