If your roots are buried in Indian Classical music, at any point of your life, you can take off,” says singer Kavita Krishnamurthy, who is all set to perform at the Amaravati Global Music and Dance Festival, to be held on this Valentine’s weekend.

Married to another exponent of Carnatic music and noted violinist L Subramaniam, who is also the artistic director of the festival, says she isn’t getting the kind of opportunities she used to get in the Bollywood music scene. “In playback singing, I’m not getting those big films that I used to get like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) or Devdas (2002). Now, the whole system of working has changed. Last two years haven’t been of great consequence. But, after singing for so many years, I’d rather not sing only for the sake of it,” says the singer who has moved from Mumbai to permanently settle in Bengaluru

However, Krishnamurthy is happy to perform at festivals and do symphony shows with her husband.“I’m doing some unconventional stuff. Like singing in these symphony orchestras that I have never done before,” she explains.

According to organisers, the festival, which will be held from February 10 to 13, will be India’s first-ever riverfront festival. Big names such as singers Anup Jalota, Suresh Wadkar, dancer Pt Birju Maharaj and actor Hema Malini are set to perform at the festival.
