Padmavati designers are still in shock

- Snigdha Ahuja

Delhi-based designer duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula are shocked after costumes they had created for Padmavati were destroyed in the second incident of vandalism on the sets of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial.

The shoot of the Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh starrer was underway at Panhala fort in Maharashtra, when a mob of 15-20 people burnt down the Kolhapur sett — costumes, jewellery, animal al feed etc — at about 12.30am.

Earlier in January, Bhansali was roughed up by a group called Karni Sena, leading to stalling of the Jaipur shoot of the film.

“The entire batch of costumes for the schedule has been damaged,” said Rimple, visibly shaken. “Everyone’s asking me to give them a number (money lost)… But, it’s hard to say right now. Everyone’s in shock.”

We’re told that some pieces in the batch were old antiques... revived from old techniques of weaving by craftsmen who put hours and hours of work on the intricate costumes. The designers had done intensive research in accordance with the timeline andan script of the film for their design. They’re required to send the compartmentalised costumes to shoot locales. One shoot schedule can use up to five to eight costumes. “More than the monetary loss, there was an emotional connect with the clothes. One can find solace in the fact that there was no human loss,” added Rimple.
