Techniques to cure pain

-

Orthopaedic surgeons strive to improve the surgery outcome with more evolved techniques, devices and instruments. The latest is an implant especially designed for the Indian patients.

Dr (Prof.) Amite Pankaj Aggarwal, joint replacement surgeon and head of unit Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, New Delhi, explains, “The implant has been specifically developed to accommodate the difference seen in the size and shape of patients bones from diverse population groups in the subcontinent.” Earlier, it was observed by the joint replacement surgeons that even after going for total knee replacement surgery, the patients would suffer pain. In majority of the cases, pain occurred when the implant was bigger than the bone surface or when the implant did not cover all the exposed cut bone. “This has been happening because most of the systems being currently used in India are based upon the anatomy of only one ethnicity and are likely to force undesirable compromises in implant shape and fit.” adds Dr Aggarwal. The new implant reduces the complications faced by patients due to mismatch in implant and bone. The implant provides high flexibility of movement which allows patients to carry out their daily chores without any pain.
