The boot-cut style was for sailors in the 18th century. In the 1970s and early ’80s, boot-cut jeans evolved to become bell-bottomed jeans, which had a much wider flare than the normal boot-cut. While the style never went out of fashion, in 2015, the boot-cut trend hit a high. Wear yours with the shirt tucked in.

Kareena Kapoor Khan. The trend of distressed or ripped jeans emerged in the late 1970s during the punk movement, and was a rage in the 1980s. It has been back on the style radar for a couple of years now. From 2014 till now, distressed denims have been getting much love. Team your ripped denims with a formal white top or a crop top or a ruffled tee — easy, comfy and stylish all at the same time.

Sonam Kapoor. Frayed and cropped from the bottom and fitted at the thighs, they are a great pick for an informal look. Flared jeans were trending in the ’70s; this is a new adaptation of that look. Team it with an offshoulder top or a halter one, and high heels.

Our closets are incomplete without a dozen pairs of jeans living in them. But do you know they have a story that will take you back to 1873? Denim, a fabric traditionally coloured blue with indigo dye, was used by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss to craft jeans.

The date May 20, 1873, is considered to be the birthday of blue jeans as Davis and Strauss got a US patent for putting rivets in sturdy trousers that were popular as work pants.

As the years passed, like any other fashion trend, jeans went through myriad adaptations. Actor Marilyn Monroe made high-waist, bottom-fold denims a rage in the ’60s after she rocked it in her 1961 movie The Misfits. In the ’70s came flared denims, and Hindi film stars such as Parveen Babi and Dharmendra wore them like a pro. Ripped jeans appeared in the mid’70s on members of the punk rock band Ramones. The ’80s were all about skinny ankle-length jeans, and also ripped jeans. Denim dungarees took over in the ’90s. Many of these trends have made a stylish comeback, and the credit goes to Bollywood’s fashionistas. Tapered at the ankle, these slim cut jeans were a hit in the 50s. Stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Roy Rogers made a style statement in these. Now, they are a fashion staple and a nice pick for casual outings. Team skinny jeans with T-shirts or crop tops. Sneakers and pointed-toe shoes go well with the look.

Esha Gupta. These jeans are straight fit but tapered from the knee and ankle area. They are loose and seem like borrowed from a boy. Perfect for those who like to keep it relaxed. High-rise denims were loved by fashionable women in the ’40s. The credit goes to actors Katherine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich, who made the style popular. Today, Bollywood celebs love high-waist jeans. Paired with a crop top, a ruffled top or a simple tee, they make for a cool summer look.
