A REGAL TOUCH TO YOUR WALL
From hand-painted folk art to patterns inspired by colonial India, glam up those bare walls at home with Nilaya by Asian Paints
Wall-coverings— no home is complete without them. It adds the perfect homey touch, doesn’t it? Well, you needn’t look far now. Asian Paints, a leader in the paints industry launched their brand of wallcoverings Nilaya, with a vision to provide a larger palette of designs to consumers with the added benefit of easy application. The brand offers a multitude of design styles inspired by art, culture, geography and textures; in addition to decals and paintable wall-coverings.
While Nilaya’s designs are inspired by global trends, its roots are firmly ensconced in the Indian landscape where a rich heritage of traditional crafts grows alongside a contemporary design environment, two worlds that Asian Paints identifies with effortlessly. These inspirations range from hand-painted folk art to large format surface printing or delicate gold leaves woven into the wall-covering. Nilaya’s products employ a range of printing techniques, from 100 year old surface presses to modern digital presses, from rotogravure to rotary screen printing.
The Nilaya design studio works on ideas inspired by the rich traditions of India, it has collaborated with leading designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee to take this vision further. The Sabyasachi Collection for Nilaya is a vibrant marriage of color, texture and pattern that’s inspired by Colonial India, trade textiles, the country’s popular arts, artefacts and destinations.
About this, Sabyasachi says,“Given a chance, I think I would have been a far better designer of spaces than of clothing. With spaces, the canvas is so much larger and people are more experimental with what they put on their walls than what they put on their skin. With that thought, I decided to undertake the project with Nilaya. I wanted to do something that was Indian, that fulfilled the cravings of a commoner to be able to afford luxury and that also spoke about India’s incredible history.”
The work done by Sabyasachi for Nilaya include:
Spice Route - This collection draws its inspiration from the fabled spices of India, enticing traders and travelers for centuries. It symbolises exotic spices and mysterious tales of trade—Cinnamon, cloves and cardamom; fragrant, exotic and potent.
India Baroque – A collection of fine wallcoverings for the luxury connoisseurs. It envisages a Pre-independent India and is an ode to the Maharajas of yore.
Jodhpur –These wallcoverings makes one travel through the lanes of the blue city and soak in the ambience of quiet dignity with understated elegance all expressed in shades of blue.
Makhmal – The collection connotes the fabric for royalty and nobility. Sumptuous, sensuous and decadent, it is favored for its glossy sheen and arresting opulence.
Varanasi – The city of Varanasi stands for art, culture and craftsmanship. This collection draws inspiration from peeli kothi where the most exotic, opulent and ethereal saris are traded every day. The process of installation is very important. Asian Paints, with over 70 years of insights into surface materials, technology, and consumer needs understands what goes behind creating a beautiful surface. These insights have led it to create a range of installation tools and materials – including a waterbased wall-covering adhesive, which has been specifically created for Indian conditions. The company has also invested in training wallcovering installers across all major cities so you are never too far from a well-trained Nilaya installer.
