TWO FILMS CAN’T BE COMPARED: AAMIR KHAN

Even as comparisons between Dangal and Salman Khan’s next film start, Aamir Khan says each film has its own beauty and they can’t be compared

His last release, Dangal broke box office records last year, in India. And now, Aamir Khan’s film is doing mindboggling business in China, too, after having made 900 crore there. HT City chats with the actor about how it feels.

Were you expecting such a humungous response for Dangal in China?

It was most unexpected. We hoped our film will be loved and well-received but never in our wildest dream had we thought of this kind of a response. It has come as an extremely pleasant surprise. It just shows that cinema and creativity have no barriers whatsoever. They cross over and touch people’s hearts irrespective of the language of the film.

Already, talks are rife whether Salman Khan’s Tubelight can break Dangal’s record...

I don’t believe in comparisons because two films can’t be compared. Each film is different and unique with distinct stories and characters. So, you can’t equate any two films with one another. If Dangal has done such huge business, it doesn’t mean that it’s the best film of India, because creative mediums are very subjective; they aren’t objective. It’s like asking, ‘Is Mother India a better film than Mughal-EAzam’ or Is Pyaasa a better film than Do Aankhen Barah Haath?’ How can you compare? Each film is beautiful, and has its own beauty.

How has the preparation been for your next film, Thugs of Hindostan?

My next release will be Secret Superstar, in August. As for Thugs of Hindostan, right now, I am in Malta and we are readying for the shoot, which kicks off on June 5. We are going to start with a big action sequence. And all the prep for the action is going on. I know there’s a lot of speculation about what my look is going to be. But let me assure that it’s nothing like what you have seen in the photos till now (laughs). I have managed to keep my look hidden. At the right time, we will reveal the look of the film and various characters.
