SOME OF DU HELP DESK’S STRANGEST QUERIES

DU aspirants and their parents have some bizarre doubts when it comes to seeking admissions. Here are some samples

After the declaration of the board exam result, the Delhi University (DU) admission process has had explosion of applications and queries. Nearly 1.25 lakh students have already applied to the central university. Although, most details are available on DU’s portal, a lot of students have been visiting the help desk set up on campus to get their queries answered. The phone lines are now inundated with questions from parents and students.

“We are getting an overwhelming response and tending to all is hard, but our workforce is working with all they’ve got,” says Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, Deputy Dean Student’s Welfare. “Student volunteers are present on our help desk and are there to answer any queries that students or parents might have. Having young volunteers makes it easy for applicants to ask whatever they want,” adds Tuteja.

However, apart from providing prompt help to all the aspiring students, the volunteers have to often deal with some really bizarre questions. “Kaafi log aise bhi hai jo bas hawa mein teer chala dete hai,” says Sagar, a student of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, who is volunteering at the help desk.

Some questions range from “Tell us about DU” to “Are KNC and KMC different colleges” and often also take a fanboy turn when students want to know what courses actor Shah Rukh Khan’s college (Hansraj College) offers. The volunteers are also, often confused for student counsellors, and have to answer queries where parents ask them to guide applicants into a career path that would suit them best. “It is common for parents and applicants to ask such questions, and nothing really surprises us anymore. “The best way to deal with such questions is to guide them to the portal or simply tell them that their question isn’t something we are equipped to deal with,” says Sagar.
