Does the idea of hiking and trekking during monsoon excite you? However, are you wondering how to go about it? Well, here are a few practical and essential tips to prepare you for your trek.

Shripad Sapkal, an adventure junkie and the founder of a popular adventure sports equipment store, says that one should be aware of their physical fitness levels before planning a trip. He says, “You should consult a physician before an adventure trip. Your doctor should declare you medically fit to go ahead with the travel you have planned.”

WORK ON YOUR PHYSICAL FITNESS

Depending on the grade and duration of the trek, one should exercise regularly to build the required physical and mental fitness levels. Sapkal says, “Start with some basic exercises such as jogging, cycling and swimming to improve your flexibility, strength and to increase your stamina.” These activities, clubbed with some breathing exercises, will be beneficial for your trekking trip.

BE WELL-PREPARED

Apart from fitness levels, one should also be aware of the other things related to the trip. Pratik Shirsath, a civil engineer and trekking enthusiast, says it is important that you have the right information about the place you are visiting.

Shirsath says, “You should know about the place in detail and its weather conditions. Keep in mind the duration of your holiday while packing your bags. Make sure you carry good trekking shoes, proper clothes (rainproof or windproof jackets, depending on the temperature and weather conditions), required equipment, personal toiletries, a torch, ID proofs and medical kit. Don’t forget to pack a good amount of food, water and energy drinks.” Such trips are thrilling but one should not expect them to be comfortable. Accordingly prepare yourself.

OVERNIGHT TREKS

Opting for an overnight trek can be a good idea, says Sapkal, adding, “An overnight trek gives a comprehensive experience of the outdoors and not just trekking. They offer a unique experience. However, one should keep in mind the facilities or resources available for it. Also, ensure that the chosen place is safe. Go for it only when the group you are travelling with has experts who can ensure your safety and has a fair idea about the place.”

SHOULD YOU GO SOLO?

It is not preferable to go for a solo trek if you are a firsttime trekker. At times, things might turn out to be different from what you had expected, so it’s best that you travel with experienced trekkers. Rahul Shendge enjoys his solo treks and says, “Always let your family and friends know about your location and whereabouts while you are on a trek. It helps in times of crisis. Travelling solo is an enjoyable experience; however, it should only be done by seasoned trekkers.”
