Say no to crash diets, here’s why

- HTC

In our effort to lose weight, many of us often take recourse to crash and extreme dieting. However, that isn’t advisable says Dr Suneet Khanna. An expert dietician and nutritionist, Khanna says eating right and exercising are key to healthy weight loss. He says, “The most common side effect of dieting is that the moment the person stops dieting, he often begins to put on weight rather than losing it.” Experts list out the side effects of dieting:

Tiredness and mood swings: Most dieting are centred around reducing the food intake. As a result, the body has less food available to convert into energy. This causes a drop in blood sugar levels, causing tiredness and irritability.

Slow metabolism: As we cut down on calories, the body turns to the stored fat reserves for energy. This slows down the rate of metabolism and can lead to a loss of muscles instead of fats. It can also stall the process of weight loss.

Getting loose skin :In case of extreme weight loss, your skin may become loose with sagging folds. This usually occurs on the upper arms and abdomen. In this case, exercise does little to help and the only way to tackle this is through surgery.

Development of Gallstones: During diets, we often cut down on the fat intake. Owing to this, the gall bladder does not contract as often as it should. This may lead to the concentration of bile which further leads to the development of gall stones which later needs to be removed.
