Fame and glamour don’t last. Being humble is what will remain with you. Stressing on your achievements hold no meaning DHARMENDRA, ACTOR

Bollywood’s first macho man, actor Dharmendra completes five decades in the film industry. And as he looks back, he wonders how time flies and where the years have gone by?

“Ek lamba safar lamhun mein guzar gaya’... I now think why it went by so soon. I miss my colleagues. I miss so many things. It was a beautiful journey,” says Dharmendra.

The veteran actor, who traces his roots to Punjab, entered showbiz in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, and went on to become Bollywood’s second He-Man, after Dara Singh.

Known for his simplicity, Dharmendra says he believes in being a super-human rather than a superstar.

“Fame and glamour don’t last. Being humble is what will remain (with you). People will say nice things about you. It isn’t a thought-out action and comes automatically. It came to me from my parents, from me it has gone to [sons] Sunny and Bobby. Stressing on your achievements hold no meaning.” He is averse to the idea of a biopic on his life, but turns to Urdu poetry to reflect on his journey so far.

“I’m an emotional person; so this (poetry) is a good outlet for me. ‘Jab kuch kaha na jae, jab kuch suna na jae, tab meri tanhai meri khamoshi se, aur khamoshi meri tanhai se baatein kar leti hai’ (When nothing is said and done, my silence and my loneliness converse with each other),” says the 81-yearold, who is looking forward to his grandson Karan’s Bollywood debut.
