Luxury bathrooms have come to town

Soft neutral shades have a universal appeal and lend sophistication to the interior. Azure by Fabinteriors – Sarbjit Singh makes use of a sleek, neutral palette brightened with a splash of azure, reminiscent of the seaside. The sapphire hued Briolette vessel adds a jewellike touch to sandy interiors.

CCBA Zen by CCBA – Christopher Charles Benninger conceptualised this suite as a homage to Japanese minimalism. The Terrace vanity and toilet are in clean, geometric white, while wooden panels and sandy floor tiles add a warmer touch.

Kitsch may be all about being rebellious and going against conventions. But to break the rules, you must know them first!

Its about randomness in the way interiors are done and items assembled. For instance, it could be different coloured photo frames on the wall or a collection of a variety of ceramic plates of different sizes. It’s more about disruption than blending or going with the flow. You have to look at how you can ‘shake up’ a regular setting with out-ofthe-box thinking. A classic formal setting can be unsettled with a bold rug or a quirky wall art or gaudy pink chandelier.

One has to look beyond normal combinations and take things from two different periods and mix them up. But at the end of the process, the elements must achieve balance in the room.

Let there be one significant design feature that is the star of the show. Too many statement features can distract one’s senses and may lead to confusion.

Be colour confident and introduce a lot of pop up shades into the house to give a dramatic effect. But colours can be used in combinations that not only look bright and cheerful, but sometimes even eccentric and funny.

How affordable is kitsch? Contrary to the popular belief that kitsch decor is expensive, the articles and items used to express this style are often available in your local flea market. But you need the discerning eye to locate it. It could be a coloured metal pot to a green-coloured chair with or a peacock motif on it. After all, it is all about a genuine effort to create something interesting. Finally, kitsch is more of an attitude and an offbeat take on just about everything. The style is not meant to be straightforward and simple but a puzzle for the senses. Each onlooker must have his or her own interpretation.
