Unleash the rebel within

What started in early 20th century as an opponent to vintage and classic style is all about free expression today

-

The origin of kitsch interiors can be traced back to the early 20th century when there was a revolution in art. So whatever was not according to the old classic style and was rebellious got classified as kitsch. The art form was then considered cheap and tacky, meant for masses.

Later modern artists and architects began defining kitsch as a separate style and art form. In his essay, famous art critic, Clement Greenberg referred to it as an offensive and vulgarized art. But kitsch decor, despite being offensive, got established as one of the main styles of designing. In India, it has in fact remained in our festivities and our celebrations too in the form of decoration comprising of various artefacts, lights, colours, face masks etc. In recent times, it has again emerged as one of the prominent art forms to express our boldness. The driving factor is the rise in middle class consumerism that has made the quirky items of art valuable pieces of purchase for home decor.

Today kitsch could be present in just about anything. From a funny monkey on throw cushions to a bullock cart on a bed sheet. You only need some imagination to represent your thoughts. Kitsch is now followed by a number of artisans and people who want to colour their homes with all kinds of shades and make a statement. According to experts, it is not the art that they showcase, it is the ‘inner self ’ that they wish to represent.
