While stuck in terrible traffic or watching an irresponsible driver violate rules, who do you generally curse? The traffic police. Right? But not anymore. To include public in managing traffic, Delhi Traffic Police has relaunched the Traffic Sentinel Mobile App. This app allows people to report traffic violations by posting pictures and videos, to alert the traffic police — and become sentinels.

There are only 5400 traffic cops in the Capital to manage more than 1 crore 5 lakh registered vehicles, and many other unregistered vehicles. “The number of cops in Delhi is like a drop in the ocean of traffic. We get reports of around 17,000 violations in a day! To reduce this number, we need the support of commoners. Through this app, if they start reporting, it will bring down traffic violations for sure,” says Ajay Kashyap, Special CP, Delhi Traffic Police.

Around 7,000 sentinels are already registered on the app and have been helping the Traffic Police. “As a sentinel, I keep my eyes and ears open and try to report as many violations I can. So far, I’ve filed seven complaints with this userfriendly app,” says Mohit Gulati, a student.

And that’s not all; the sentinels will get points as rewards each time he/she reports a violation. “The reward system is to motivate citizens. For each photograph or video uploaded, the user will get an acknowledgement along with a unique transaction number. And, if the offence is proven, points will be allocated to the sentinel,” says Kuldeep Singh Dul, inspector, Delhi Traffic Police.
