This party is fighting for paperless DUSU elections

- Aditya Dogra

The Delhi University elections are round the corner. But, with all the promotional frenzy, there’s a huge mess that’s created. Thousands of pamphlets are left strewn on the roads and in the college grounds. This might change now, as the No Poster Party (NPP) is campaigning to make DU clean. It’s an initiative by four students of Miranda House — Nancy Sharma, Marya Hasan, Simran Kapoor and Swastika Kharbanda. They came up with the idea last year with aim of keeping DUSU (Delhi University Students Union) elections paper-free and eco friendly. The party got the support of over 70 students last year, who cleaned the roads and walls at 6 am.

This year, the party wants the message to reach every single student “NPP has been doing nukkad nataks, signature campaigns, and cleanliness drives to make people aware about paper wastage during elections. We will also form a human chain which urge everyone to save paper,” says Marya Hasan from the NPP. “The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had issued notice to Delhi University against paper wastage during elections. The Lyngdoh Committee recommendations on student union elections also allow only the use of handmade posters. Colleges also urge candidates to not make a mess, but no one listens. That’s why we are campaigning early,” she says. The NPP also wants fair elections, so that no one offers bribe in the form of pizzas, beauty products and movie tickets. “Activities like marathons can replace promotions through thousands of posters and unfair means,” says Swastika Kharbanda from NPP.
