Afive-day fest embracing diverse streams from cinema to cuisine opens in the city next week.

The annual festival, which kickstarts today, will include food from Israel, Bharatanatyam from the South, contemporary art of India, archives from Russia and cinema from Italy.

American-born Indian Bharatanatyam dancer Justin McCarthy, who will open the fest with her recital, Where the Streets are Fragrant with Sandal Paste, says, “Through this piece, we want to touch upon the idea of critical praise of the art form as a method of keeping it alive. We are looking at how patronage affected dance, from divine patronage to temporal patronage.”

To mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Russia, an exhibition of archival photographs, maps, illustrations and paintings will be on display.

Apart from this, for history and theatre lovers, a play to mark the centenary of the Champaran Satyagraha, Mohan se Mahatma will be staged. It encompasses the journey of Mahatma Gandhi’s life. The festival will also pay tribute to classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar through her student Nandini Bedekar.

That’t not all. The food section will include specially curated meals by city-based chefs along with Germanybased culinary master Alex Moser.

Thus, this festival is truly gearing up to be a milieu of fine arts, music, dance and food.
