‘I used to be very hyper in the initial stages’

Today, I want every film to do well. If we go against each other, or if we get happiness from other people’s fall, then there’s no way we’re going to move ahead VARUN DHAWAN, ACTOR

Prashant Singh

Actor Varun Dhawan is on a high as his new film, Judwaa 2, enters the `100 crore club. We catch up with Varun for a quick chat about career, life and more.

Many feel you are a mix of Govinda and Salman. Do you take such things seriously?

I don’t take such tags seriously at all. What matters is whether the audience likes the film or not. Everything else is secondary.

I have realised that your personal life does not matter; it should not even come out. If you’re a great guy off-screen but you’re a bad actor, and you are dishonest with your work, then I wouldn’t spend my money on you.

This is your fifth year in Bollywood. How’re things?

I used to be very hyper initially in my career. I used to be very competitive. But I feel I haven’t been that competitive in the past three years. I’ve seen how the business has been evolving. Today, I want every film to do well. If we go against each other, or if we get happiness from other people’s fall, then there’s no way we’re going to move ahead.

After your father (David Dhawan, director of Judwaa 2), any plans to work with your brother, Rohit Dhawan (director of Dishoom, 2016), again?

I hope so, but I don’t think he wants to take me in his films. He doesn’t think I’m a star. If he has his way, he’ll send me to fetch bread. He’s my elder brother; he has that right.

Recently, you said that the term ‘star’ is used very loosely...

Audiences give that tag to you out of love, and I’ve got a lot of love. People can call me a lot of things, but it’s the film that matters. I do like the tag. Who doesn’t? But I feel everyone — Taapsee (Pannu), Jacqueline (Fernandez) and Rajpal Yadav — is as much a star as I am in Judwaa 2.

Marriage on your mind?

When I get married, I’ll invite you. I don’t want to [now] take all the attention away from all the good things in life. But I’m very unpredictable and can do anything. Kuch bhi ho sakta hai zindagi mein.
