On the day of the festival of lights — Diwali — one prefers to celebrate with family and friends. But, for the officials of Delhi Police, who safeguard the city, the entire city is their family.

“Our work doubles during the festive season; but that’s not new. We have to be extra careful and attentive to avoid any mishap in the city. For the same, we patrol for elongated hours of day and night. My family knows, and supports me to deliver my duties,” says Deepak Sharma, a constable with PCR (Police Control Room) van for two years.

Like Sharma, there are hundreds of police personnel who patrol on the night of Diwali. But, what keeps these officers going is a generous act. Every Diwali, the senior officials take to the streets of Delhi to be with their colleagues. “The best part, of serving the citizens on Diwali, is the visit of our seniors. They don’t just appreciate our efforts, but also share mithai with us,” adds Sharma.

These sweets add sweetness to the thoughts of their loved ones, providing them the succour essential for rendering duty for long hours. Manish Kumar, another constable of PCR vans, says, “My kids are young, and feel sad that I don’t celebrate Diwali with them. But, I make them understand that I’ve my responsibility towards the city. Hum aapas mein to kabhi bhi celebrate kar sakte hain.”

It’s to make everyone feel included during festivities that the senior officers have been visiting the juniors since a few years. Madhur Verma, DCP and PRO Delhi Police, says, “This drive is symbolic to ensure that none from the team feels left out.” Monika Bhardwaj, DCP, PCR, says, “It’s our duty to meet our team on the day of Diwali — once during the day and once during the night — and we do it willingly. My family knows that I’m going out to make my colleagues feel special on the festive occasion, and ensure that the citizens feel secure.”
