Going down memory lane on SRK’s birthday

Shah Rukh Khan often says that he’s still a Delhi boy at heart. His Hans Raj College (Delhi University) connect is no secret. But very few know about the houses he lived in the city — the origin of the humble beginnings of a teenage boy with big dreams who went on to become the King Khan of Bollywood.

As SRK turns 52 today, here’s a trip down memory lane. The early settlers in New Rajinder Nagar would point to a white bungalow in F Block, sharing tales of a young SRK — how he’d play cricket with his friends.

As HT City went about speaking to neighbours, resident Anil Khanna shared, “We’d play together as kids. I remember his parents treating us with so much love. They were really nice people.”

Shah Rukh was 15 when he shifted to Gautam Nagar. Although some in the bylanes remember him as the boy who’d regularly rent film CDs, his house is now a PG accommodation for girls, and has been long forgotten as one of SRK’s houses.

Kailash Kumar, who has been taking care of the house for almost 15 years, told us, “The girls living here don’t even know that one of the rooms was once occupied by Shah Rukh Khan.”

It was here that the actor forayed into the entertainment industry. “He used to hang around with us before Fauji (TV show) happened,” says Arjun Prasad, an employee of the landlord.

Shah Rukh shifted to Mumbai in 1992.
