WOMEN’S CONSENT IS VITAL
Actor Shweta Tripathi says that though she has never faced sexual harassment in Bollywood, she knows that it is prevalent
It all started with actor Ashley Judd alleging that she was sexually harassed by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. And this led to more women opening up about the violence faced by them, including not just celebrities, but common people too. Shweta Tripathi of Masaan (2015) fame is the latest to speak up about it. The actor reveals that there are many people like Harvey Weinstein in Bollywood also.
“Thankfully, I didn’t have to face something like this [sexual harassment] because of the kind of people I worked with. But just because it didn’t happen with me doesn’t mean that I believe something of this sort doesn’t happen, ya aisa kuchh nahi hai. It certainly exists,” says Shweta, who was last seen in the film Haraamkhor opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
The 32-year-old adds that if a victim of such an incident seeks help from her, then she will definitely be there for them. “If a girl comes up to me, scared because of such a situation, I will do whatever possible in my capacity. This is wrong and should not be happening. Sirf ek WhatsApp group banane se kuchh nahi hoga,” she says.
Recently, voicing her opinion on the issue, actor Tisca Chopra had made a statement that such incidents take place because “women are just as much to blame, because they put themselves in those vulnerable positions”. Reacting to the same, Shweta says, “You might not know the exact situation. It is always tricky. Sometimes, a girl has invited somebody or is going on a date, but that does not mean she is going to be okay with everything or won’t have a say! It is not about blaming people or finding faults, but standing up for what you feel is right.”
Meanwhile, Shweta is gearing up for her Tamil film debut. The yet-to-be-titled project will be helmed by Saravanan Rajendran. As per reports, the actor is trying to learn the Tamil language for the same.
