CELEBRATING 97TH FOUNDATION DAY
Jamia Millia Islamia hosted two-day celebrations recently, with a Talimi Mela showcasing the university’s cultural and educational legacy
With music, dance, plays and lectures, Jamia Millia Islamia marked its 97th Founder’s Day recently with their annual Talimi Mela. A tradition that the university has been following for years, the openfor-all mela invited not only the faculty and students, but also people from the neighbourhood to join in. “The open house system gave everyone a chance, not only to celebrate, but also to learn about the university and all that happens in it while at the same time, showing them the importance of education,” said professor Talat Ahmad, vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. “It also exposed school children to life in the university; to help them make better choices in the future.”
Another highlight of the mela was stalls put up by various departments that showcased interactive activities and art exhibits among other things.
The Jamia Through The Ages stall that showed the universities’ journey from its inception was quite popular. Aqdas Siddiqui, a first-year student at the university said, “The mela gave us a chance to see and understand more than what our course or faculty has to offer. There were some great stalls and activities, and we had a great time.”
Sabah Jamil, a visitor at the mela said, “I loved the artworks displayed by the Faculty of Fine Arts where I also got a tattoo designed and my name calligraphed. We had made the most of the selfie point too!”
The all-terrain vehicle built by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the self-charging eco-friendly car by the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship were popular attractions.
