‘I’M JEALOUS OF INDIAN SINGERS’
Ed Sheeran, who performed in Mumbai on Sunday, says there is no one in the western world who can sing like Indian singers; adds India is his favourite place in the world
Grammy Awardwinning singer Ed Sheeran, who performed in Mumbai on Sunday, to a 10,000-strong crowd, was “overwhelmed” by the fan frenzy around him. “I think, I have gotten pretty big in India. It was a pretty overwhelming reaction [to see so many people]. I was taken aback,” the English singer, who was on his second trip to India, told CNN News 18, adding, “India is one of my favourite places in the world to come to. I love the music, the food.”
However, it is the attention here that he seemed to enjoy the most. “Last time, when I played here, it was pretty amazing ... [but] I think, I’ve become more popular here since my last concert,” he told ANI.
A big fan of Indian music, Sheeran further confessed that he was jealous of Indian singers. “I’m really envious of how Indian singers use their voices and how they sing. I don’t think there is anyone in the western world, who can sing like that. I am jealous,” he told ANI.
Bhangra seems to be his most favourite genre as he wanted to hit a “bhangra bar” in Mumbai after the concert. “I just want to dance,” he said.
A night before his performance, Sheeran hobnobbed with some of the biggest Bollywood celebrities including, Shah Rukh Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput, among others, at a party hosted by filmmaker Farah Khan. Speaking about the filmi party, he told CNN News 18, “I loved it. It was mad. They played lots of music. I drank lot of gin and tonic, and I met everyone in Bollywood.”
But it looked like that the stars were only interested in partying with Ed, since none of them turned up for his concert. Interestingly, Justin Bieber’s concert in Mumbai earlier this year, was attended by the big names from Bollywood. Speaking to HT City about why she skipped the concert, Farah said, “My kids are too young to take to a concert and I am too spoilt to stand there for three hours! He [Ed] did give me 20 VIP passes, which I distributed to my friends.”
