Most of us have that one friend who appears out of nowhere, whenever you are about to eat your lunch and cleans half your plate in mere seconds. Food snitchers — who like to eat from other people’s plates even though they have their own food — have a dog’s nose and pounce like a cat whenever there is food around.

However, the question is, why do some people get a thrill from eating someone else’s food? We got in touch with psychologist Shivani Misri Sadhoo and Pulkit Sharma, who list out a few possible reasons as to why others’ food appeals to snitchers.

GLUTTONY

One of the most common reasons for such behaviour is gluttony aka binge-eating. For such people, their own food is never enough. Whenever they see food within their reach, they hover around with their forks, make small conversation, and then go for a bite or two. This is predominantly a side effect of stress.

GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE

For food snitchers, grass is always greener on the other side. Even when they have brought themselves a large pizza for lunch, they would prefer to have your ‘sabzi roti’ just because it’s yours and not their own. They operate by first finishing off the entire office’s plates and then theirs.

TO FIT IN

Sometimes, people eat other’s food because they want to feel part of the group. Eating together or sharing food is known to strengthen relationships. Besides, when you see everyone around you eating because it’s a special occasion, you also want to fit in. Most of us do that by snitching food.

BECAUSE THEY CAN, AND THERE’S FREE FOOD!

Why do we snitch food? Because we can. Imagine, your friend has brought delicious doughnuts to the office, and as soon as you see it, you think, it’s delicious, it’s free. Your colleague or friend won’t say no to you, so why not? A bite here and there, and you are set for the day.

CLEAN PLATE SYNDROME

One of the least understood reasons for why some people like to finish off the food on others’ plates is because they suffer from the clean plate syndrome. Yes, it’s a legit thing! Clean plate syndrome involves an individual feeling the need to consume all the food on their or other people’s plates even if they are satiated.
