‘Perks and perils come together for stars’

-

Vivek Oberoi, who ventured into Hindi filmdom with the successful Company (2002), went to feature in films such as Saathiya (2002) and Yuva (2004).

However, this was followed by a dull period in his career, as films like Kyun…! Ho Gaya Na (2004) and Kisna (2005) failed. The actor says this did not bog him down, and he treated failure as part of a rollercoaster ride.

“There are ups and downs and if you decide to have fun, then it is nothing, but a rollercoaster ride,” the actor, last seen in Bank Chor, says.

About the constant clamour around celebrity kids to match up to their parents, Vivek, the son of actor Suresh Oberoi, says, “A lot of us decided to carve our own niche. There are perks to being a star kid, but there are perils, too, and thus the expectations from you are very high.”

The 41-year old says that comparisons will always be there for star kids. “It is a very large mountain to climb, but I think at the end, what truly matters is talent,” he says, adding, “The audience accepts and loves you for your talent. The same opportunity can also be given to someone who is not a star kid. There is no formula. Many star kids failed because people didn’t think they had the talent to give them the love or adulation they gave to their parents,” he notes.

On what the perils of being a star are, Vivek elaborates, “I think there are two extreme ends – there is the love, the respect that you receive, and then there is the other extreme of the same coin – people will troll you, hound you for personal choices, and there is a certain loss of privacy. The perks and perils come together.”
