This is how you lose her: Fear of breaking up ends up causing it

-

Is the fear of breaking up with your partner nagging you? The level of this fear may influence the romance and commitment, thereby either boosting your relationship or ending it.

A study, conducted by researchers from Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Italy, states that romance fades when faced with a high or low risk of break up.

The results showed romance and commitment diminished when couples heard that there could be either a high or low risk of a break-up. But when participants were told that there was only a moderate chance the relationship would end, romance and commitment grew stronger.

For the study, people in romantic relationships were divided in two groups, where the first group was provided the statistics of the list of failures in their relationship, while the second group was given false feedback about the end of their relationships.

The results showed that romance diminished when people heard that there could be either a high or low risk of a break-up. However, when participants were told that there was only a moderate chance that the relationship would end, the level of commitment grew stronger.

“Reduced relationship commitment leads to dissolution considerations and, thereby, to actual relationship breakup,” added Giuseppe Pantaleo, a researcher on the study.
