In today’s fast-paced world, it’s a constant struggle to maintain the right balance between eating well and staying fit.
Dr Mickey Mehta, global holistic health guru and corporate life coach, suggests that to maintain a healthy lifestyle, it’s best to opt for a wholesome and nutritious vegetarian meal. “I feel the word diet should be removed from the dictionary and instead be replaced with nutritious eating,” he says.
Mehta, a staunch believer of equipment-free workouts, adds, “When we eat and sleep daily, why not exercise daily? My workouts are go-green workouts, where the idea is to conserve and preserve. The most important funda behind such workouts is to be lean without being mean. One should plug out from the machines and plug in the heart.” These workouts stem out from yoga and involve creative ways of exercising that are not aggressive. The idea is to not indulge in high intensity workouts which result in exertion.
So, does that mean he doesn’t recommend hitting the gym? He clarifies, “Apart from the go-green workouts, going to the gym twice or thrice a week is absolutely fine. To maintain a healthy lifestyle and overall wellbeing of the body, a 30-minute workout is sufficient. If you have bigger goals (in terms of physique), go for gymming, but take your time to adapt to heavy machinery.”
Talking about the best time for workouts, Mehta proposes, “The ideal time to exercise is early morning because that’s the time you’re most productive and your body gets synchronised. In the evening, light swimming or light yoga is the best.” He also clarifies, “These are just the ideal timings. The most important thing is to work out; be it at any time of the day, just make sure you’re exercising.” Mehta also mentions, “Ideally, I would like people to get out and exercise in the open, whether it’s a park, playground, or a beach.”
Acknowledging that people often make mistakes while following a healthy eating regime, he says, “We are humans and our bodies respond to what we eat. Just don’t go overboard with consuming excessive amounts of protein and supplements.”
Since the wedding season is on and the festive spirit for Christmas and New Year’s has also kicked in, eating healthy tends to go for a toss. But that’s nothing to worry about, assures Mehta, as he says, “Parties are a great opportunity to eat lots of salads along with a bit cheating. After all, we’re humans. We fall prey to taste and hunger pangs. The key is moderating the intake; so once in a while, it’s okay to indulge.”
