ARMING POLICE FAMILIES WITH PAYING SKILLS
The police look after the city, but who looks after the financial needs of police personnel? The answer is Prashiksha, a skill training initiative
To help the families of Delhi Police personnel acquire vocational skills, the Police Families Welfare Society (PFWS) has collaborated with the government for the first time and has come up with two skill development centres: one in Model Town and another in Narela Police Colony. “The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Skill India has joined hands with us. They’ll impart training to police personnel’s family members,” says Suchana Patnaik, PFWS president.
The initiative, Prashiksha, was taken under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. “It’s a step towards women’s empowerment. The Narela centre will offer a tailoring course, and the Model Town centre will run a beautician course. Both the colonies have a large number of residents and we hope that [this training] will benefit them,” adds Patnaik. The idea is to help these families increase their income.
A batch of 60 people has been shortlisted for a three-month training course, to begin with. “It’s a free training programme for the participants,” says Sushi Singh, vice-president, PFWS. “After completion, each trainee will be given a course certificate by NSDC, which will help them in finding jobs. NSDC will also arrange placements for them, if possible close to where they live.”
Mala Baijal, wife of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, who was the chief guest, praised Prashiksha, saying, “The opening of skill development centres is a great initiative. This will help in the overall growth of police families in Delhi.”
