BRIT AWARDS, 2018: ALL THAT HAPPENED
Singers Dua Lipa and Stormzy were the biggest winners at BRIT (British Record Industry Trust) awards, 2018, taking two trophies each at the event.
Lipa was named the best female solo artist and breakthrough act at the award ceremony held in London on Wednesday, while rapper Stormzy won the British male solo artist award and British album of the year for Gang Signs & Prayer.
Ed Sheeran took the global success award but lost in the other three categories and One Direction star Harry Styles won for video of the year by a British artist. Rock band, Foo Fighters took the prize for the best international group and the US rapper Kendrick Lamar was adjudged as the best international male artist. New Zealand singer Lorde took the female solo artist honours.
The event witnessed performances by Sheeran, Lipa and Lamar, who rapped on top of a glass cube containing a luxury car that was smashed up by a man wielding a bat. Lamar’s act suffered from some technical glitches that muted periods of his act, leading fans to express frustration on social media. Justin Timberlake opened the show with a rendition of Say Something. Gorillaz, the cartoon hip-hop band, formed by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and illustrator Jamie Hewlett, 20 years ago, picked up their first Brit award.
Many stars in attendance wore white roses to show support for the Time’s Up and #Metoo movements against sexual harassment on women. “We’re protesting in our own way and we’re going to make a difference,” said Lipa.
The show also saw Oasis front man Liam Gallagher perform Live Forever in a tribute to the victims of a suicide bombing attack on a venue hosting a concert by the US pop star Ariana Grande in Manchester in May 2017, which killed 22 people.
