Actor Aahana Kumra has featured in a video made for UN Women — United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, where she has highlighted the plight of women in our society.

Created in collaboration with stand-up comedy group East India Comedy (EIC), the one-minute-43-seconds long video, titled Brainwash, was India’s official entry in the UN this year, and has gone viral.

The Lipstick under My Burkha (2017) actor was also invited on behalf of UN Women to participate in UN’s conference held on March 1 at Ecozzeria, Tokyo, Japan. Happy to be a part of the convention, Aahana shares that the conference gave her the opportunity to meet “women from varied societies and world” and discuss with them “what their life is all about.” Talking about it, Aahana says, “I felt privileged to be a part of the UN Women for such an important cause for combating violence through humour. I was grateful to the UN Women that they thought of inviting me as a guest for this cause because diplomats from Japan ministry and popular personalities from different walks of life were also a part of it.” The video portrays the varied role of women in society and throws light on global issues such as gendersensitive quandaries and patriarchy. It also showcases the role and contribution of women in creating peaceful societies and even in averting violent extremism.

Aahana adds, “I believe humour is something that hits hard and people tend to take to humour a little more easily as compared to something that’s more seriously told to them.

The UN Women has taken a great step; they collaborated with comedians from India, Indonesia and Bangladesh.”

About her experiences at the event, she says, “Pikotaro (singer) was also present at the event, and he’s a big star in Japan. Everyone discussed how humour is used as an element to leave a message against violent extremism prevalent in our society.”
