WAY OF LIFE

Dr Prabhudesai points out that lifestyle factors that affects one’s eyesight are smoking, poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle and ultraviolet rays.

Genetics is also a major factor when it comes to determining possible problems related to vision. Ophthalmologist Anita Joseph says, “Bad genes often lead to poor vision at a young age. Age is another factor that affects one’s eyesight. After reaching the mid-twenties, eye cells begin to deteriorate, causing diseases and dysfunction. Stress levels also cause declines in vision. Tiredness, muscular tension and fatigue lead to poor eyesight.”

Just like being tired makes the vision blurry sometimes, overworked and hence strained eye muscles can also make the eyes blurry. A sudden rise in adrenaline can also cause multiple types of vision distortions such as blurriness, tunnel vision, and even hallucinations. Dr Harshavardhan Ghorpade, cornea, cataract and refractive surgeon, says, “Overexposure to media, cell phones and computer screens for long hours can cause dry eyes. Poor nutrition can cause retinal degeneration and cataract. Constant use of cosmetics and contact lenses can cause infection and allergies. Family history of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment also increases the risk of eye problems.”

EAT RIGHT

A healthy diet goes a long way in avoiding vision problems. Make sure your diet is packed with a variety of fruits and vegetables. “Brussels sprouts, kale, spinach and broccoli are the best options to be included in diet. These foods are good sources of vitamins A and C, along with calcium, zinc, and magnesium. Each of these minerals helps to support eye muscles. They also fight against diseases and support the immune system. Include a lot of carrots in diet as they help see in the dark. This is because of the presence of beta carotene, which aids in night vision,” says Dr Joseph.

Fruits good for the eyesight include kiwis, black currants, and bilberries. It has also been scientifically proven that including lutein in diet helps reduce chances of developing cataracts and macular degeneration disease. Whole eggs are rich in lutein, and for vegetarians, maize is a good option.
