‘LIKE TO WORK ON ONE SONG AT A TIME’

Singer Jubin Nautiyal says he has to have a ‘personal connection’ with every song that he performs, as it helps him maintain his identity

Whenever Jubin Nautiyal is asked to record a song, he practically “lives” it before he walks into the recording studio. The 27-yearold singer believes in establishing a “personal connection” with every song that he sings, as it helps him maintain his identity.

“I am that kind of an artist who works on one song at a time. I eat, breathe, practically live that song; I try to make a personal connection with it. I try to say [express] things written in the song, the way I would say [express] them in my personal life. I guess that’s what composers love about my voice as well,” he says.

The trick before recording a song, according to Jubin, is to understand the “composer’s vision” for the song. “As a singer, I cater to the expectations (of the composer) by understanding what they are feeling or what they see through the song or how they want to hear my voice. Once I understand and get their vision, I know what has to be done, and only then do I start recording the song,” he says.

That’s precisely the reason, why Jubin isn’t bothered if he has to work with two different composers, for the same film, something that happened to him recently, when he recorded two songs in the recently released film Hate Story 4.

“It’s quite obvious that different music composers will have different expectations and visions for their songs. Different composers also see the differences in my tones, my expressions, and the approach to each song depending [on what’s required for the moment]. That’s why you have to understand their vision, and that’s why I don’t have a problem with working with two music directors for one film,” he says.

“In both the songs, Boond Boond for Arko (Pravo Mukherjee) and Tum Mere Ho for Mithoon, you can see the different visions, and you can hear that difference as well,” he adds.

As a singer, I cater to the expectations (of the composer) by understanding what they are feeling or how they want to hear my voice. Once I understand and get their vision, I know what has to be done.
