Mecca, the annual cultural fest of Hindu College, is undoubtedly one of the biggest festivals in Delhi University. Apart from the usual line-up of cultural events, the fest had names such as The Local Train, DJ Zaeden and singer Amit Trivedi perform for a footfall unmatched by any other college fests this season. And that’s not all, the threeday fest gave its visitors a chance to indulge in delicious food, enjoy fun activities, and of course, take a whole lot of selfies.

Themed — Around The World in 72 hours — the fest’s decor took us to varied cities thanks to interesting maps, graffiti and trinkets scattered across the college campus courtesy Abstractions, The Fine Arts Society of Hindu college, who were also responsible for the Graffiti competition (won by Aadra Jain, Vrinda Sharma and Gorango Sarkar from MSI, Hindu and DCAC) and The Inkredibles (won by Mohit Knack from College.

CULTURE VULTURES

From fashion showcases to music and dance competitions, slam poetry and photography exhibits, there was enough to entertain the culture vultures who had descended on the campus. And that wasn’t all! There were events like Gully Cricket and Street Soccer in the mix too, so no one gets bored. While I Vogue of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce bagged the first position in the fashion competition once again, it was Verve of Sri Venkateswara College that had everyone impressed during the western dance competition. Ayaam of Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology claimed a surprising victory in the street play competition, and SGTB Khalsa College and SGND Khalsa College scored the top spot together in the folk dance competition. Sparx of Gargi College, too, was applauded for their act that helped them bag a victory in the choreography competition. Sukriti Poddar of Gargi College was declared the winner for Mecca Idol 2018, thanks to her rendition of Raina Beeti Jaye.

THE BAAP OF ALL PERFORMANCES

The performances on the first two days by The Local Train and DJ Zaeden were a complete blast. But, nothing compared to the grand finale that Bollywood sensation Amit Trivedi delivered on the third day. There were a few initial hiccups with technical difficulties delaying the performance and event managers letting in their family near the stage area (students were pretty pissed with that), but thing changed dramatically as soon as Trivedi and his team took to stage. The singer started straight off with Dilli Dilli and had students hooting. Trivedi said, “I am not going to ask you guys how you are doing because I can see that you are doing effing good! It is fantastic to see this energy. Sorry, we were a bit late, there were some technical problems. We apologise for that but you guys have been patient so keep the energy going because the party has just started. The first half of the show is for ears, and the second half is for legs.”

UDDAA HINDU

Trivedi went on to introduce singers Meghna Mishra, Arun Kamath, Divya Kumar and Yashita Sharma who sung individual tracks such as Nachdi Phira, Yeh Fitoor Mera, Ikk Kudi and Da Da Dasse. The singer also performed songs from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Punjab, and also indulged in Garba and Bhangra while he was at it. Keeping his promise of making everyone go crazy, Trivedi said, “After Punjab, it is time for ‘Ud-daa Punjab’,” as he made the audience have a ball at the concert.

“Yeh Ud-daa Punjab nahi hai, look around, yeh aaj Uddaa Hindu hai. I have never seen so much energy at any college fest, aur mai saare attend kar chuka hoon iss saal,” said Samant Mehra, a student who just couldn’t stop dancing to Trivedi’s songs.
