I want to thank the jury for awarding Newton the National Award for Best Hindi Film. I hope this award and the film’s commercial success creates a bigger space for political cinema.

PANKAJ TRIPATHI ACTOR

The 65th National Film Awards were announced on Friday, and the Rajkummar Rao-starrer Newton, India’s official entry to Oscars 2018, won the Best Hindi Film award. Pankaj Tripathi got a Special Mention award for Newton. Sridevi, who died earlier this year, won the Best Actress award for Mom, while Riddhi Sen got the Best Actor trophy for Nagar Kirtan (Bengali).

Last year’s film Baahubali: The Conclusion won the National Award for Best Popular Film. The multilingual epic won two more awards — Best Action Direction and Best Special Effects.

Malayalam filmmaker Jayaraj won the Best Director award for Bhayanakam. The Best Feature Film was Village Rockstars (Assamese).

Actor Vinod Khanna who died last year, was given the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. HTC
