CANNES SAYS TIME’S UP IN STYLE

Supermodel Naomi Campbell walked the runway at the Fashion for Relief Gala, whose aim this year is to raise funds for the Time’s Up movement. Campbell was joined by Bella Hadid and Hailey Baldwin on the ramp.
Meanwhile, a day after being a part of the historic march for equality led by 82 women, at the Cannes Film Festival, actor Salma Hayek opened up on the current cultural climate in Hollywood. “As a woman that’s been part of this community and has had to go through the struggles that all women have had to go through, it’s an important step to see this happen,” Hayek said of the march. The 51-year-old actor went on to state that the inflated fees demanded by some leading male actors may have to do with less money being left for their female co-stars.
Actors Cate Blanchett and Ava DuVernay, along with director Agnes Vardawere led the march to protest the lack of female filmmakers throughout the history of the festival.
Manto, Nandita Das’ film on the life of revolutionary Urdu poet Saadat Hasan Manto also made waves at the festival with its premiere. Lauding the performance of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Screendaily writes, “Nawazuddin is convincingly tortured as a writer whose determination to give authentic voices to the voiceless landed him repeatedly in court on charges of obscenity.”
Rapper Pitbull has dropped out of his Cannes concert due to “issues with his voice.” The organisers’ rep said, “We are working on a replacement [for] this situation at the moment.” The event scheduled for today is being held in the honour of actor John Travolta receiving the first Cinema Icon Award from Variety.
