A golden tribute to the king of Swing by Gary Lawyer

- Nabanita Das

Remember Ol’ Blue Eyes Is Back by Frank Sinatra or the king of Swing, Benny Goodman’s Sing, Sing, Sing? These yesteryear songs still transport one to the era of swing. And bringing that musical vibe to Delhi, after a phenomenal run in Mumbai, singer Gary Lawyer, will perform in the city paying a tribute to the legends of the genre. The man with the golden voice, as Gary is popularly know, is set to enthral Delhiites today with hits of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles and Sammy Davis Jr at the event, Sinatra & Swing.

Creating music for more than 20 years, Gary still feels a young artist’s excitement when facing the audience. He says, “It’s always been fabulous to play to the Delhi crowd. I have always thought Delhi to be a lovely responsive crowd and I am expecting a great performing event. It’s just the question of getting the audience to the theatre.”

Gary, who has performed in every nook and corner of India, feels that performing in India has been phenomenal for him, which actually helped him take to western music for a living. Western music in India hasn’t changed much and the music scene is extremely different from what one can perceive it as in the US. “Over there, you have less freedom, you have to have a publicist, you are always controlled by someone. And I am not one of those people. I can’t be controlled,” says Gary, who is happy making music in India with a limited social media presence.

Gary will be performing in the Capital with a young band from Pune with whom he had associated for the past nine years.

Does Gary have a superstition or a ritual before getting on stage, like many artists? “No, no... I just try to keep out of trouble from health issues... Do a bit of warm-up. And I wear more black because it needs less ironing,” he laughs.
