- Sarabpreet Kaur

When Prince Harry and actor Meghan Markle got married on May 19, congratulations poured in from across the globe. Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh, who is in UK for a tour, also wished the couple, but in his trademark desi style.

During his performance in Birmingham, a day after the royal wedding, Diljit enthralled the crowds by singing his congratulations for the now Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Calling theirs “a match made in heaven”, he crooned that “sweets have been sent to the Buckingham Palace — there’s motichoor laddu, and gulab jamun, too”. He added that it’s celebration time in the UK, and everyone would join in!

The original Punjabi lyrics go like, “Harry te Meghan di Jodi rab ne banayi h. Mitran de walo ohnu raj k wadayi hai. Buckingham Palace bhej dite ne mithaiyan waale dabbe ni, motichoor de ladoo te gulab jamun ne gabe ni. Tusi rakh lo koi date, karange celebrate; sass Elizabeth leyo, naal leyo jeath. Ho Rav Hanjra, sukh naal UK ch raunak puri laayi hai, Harry te Meghan di Jodi rab ne banayi hai.”

At one point, the huge screen behind Diljit displayed a photo of the royal couple to which the audience responded with a loud cheer. Diljit, whose stint in Bollywood includes films Udta Punjab (2016) and Phillauri (2017), shared a clipping of his performance on social media.

Had the singer’s team planned this special wish in advance? “Yes, yes! It’s our way of saying congratulations and best wishes from the Punjabis,” says Rav Hanjra, who has written all the songs for Diljit’s latest album, including the song, High End, which already has more than 55 million views on YouTube.
