Singer-composer Badshah is one of the many popular singers who have often been accused of objectifying women in their songs — either through the lyrics or the music videos. However, the rapper feels that he has never done that and has always respected women. Referring to his last song, Tareefan, from the film Veere Di Wedding, which is picturised on Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Kareena Kapoor Khan, Badshah insists that it echoes this sentiment.

“I [have] never hurt anyone’s sentiments, and have always respected women. I have always encouraged women’s empowerment and supported all the right causes that I need to support,” he adds.

Badshah, who is known for hit tracks such as Saturday Saturday (2012), Wakhra Swag (2016), and DJ Waley Babu (2015), understands that the lyrics of a song can be “subjective” and interpreted in many different ways, but he insists that it does not mean that they are vulgar or lewd.

“I have repeatedly said that the way you perceive lyrics is a very subjective matter,” he says, adding, “Something might sound like something to someone, and it might sound entirely different to someone else. Yes, some might not like the lyrics, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are vulgar or disrespect anyone,” he says.

Meanwhile, the rapper says that he is “thrilled” to see the response for his latest song, but he is humble enough to not get carried away by the success.

“I have just been fortunate that my songs go viral [instantly]. I never compose or create music with this motive. My motive [to create music] is for people to enjoy it. I don’t celebrate the success of my songs. As soon as it is out of my system, I keep a track of it for a month, how is it faring... then I start working on the next one,” he says.
