Planning to give your house a makeover but don’t want to spend a bomb? Then DIY (Do It Yourself) home decor hacks are for you! These hacks will help you give a unique look to your abode. And there’s no better way to go about it than by recycling old household items. From jazzing up old doors to turning books into wall art, there’s plenty to get inspired by.
DISCARDED LADDERS
Have an old ladder lying around the house? Why don’t you give it a quick makeover? “You can paint it in a nice colour and cover its foot with sutli (thin rope) for a rustic touch,” says interior designer Manjula Khanna. Attach hardboard shelves and use it to stack books, hang photos, tie scarves, or simply wrap some fairy lights through the rungs.
RAGGED SKIRTS
Bring out your old skirts to lend a quirky touch your home decor by using them as table cloth and runners. It works best on round tables, topped with a floral centrepiece.
OLD DOORS
A walk through the markets of Mehrauli will lead you to once beautiful and majestic doors, which are now lying neglected at scrap markets. You can turn it into a table top, frame for portraits, or room divider, after reviving it with wood cleaner and varnish.
DRIED LEAVES
“Go through your backyard or neighbourhood park to find big leaves such as from peepal, banyan, kosam, and sal trees. Press them between books, and once they have dried, hang them like a lampshade. You can also paste them in patterns along walls,” says Harinder Singh, designer, 1469. You can also paint them in metallic shades and frame them.
VINTAGE BOOKS
What if we told you that your ld books can be turned into rt works for your walls? Open the books to your favourite page and superglue them to your wall. If you have yellowed and worn out books, you can carefully take apart the pages and arrange them in frames to adorn the walls.
