Dealing with PCOS: Add almonds, milk, veggies in your diet
PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is one of the most common gynaecological issue among Indian women. The symptoms can be difficult to manage but with the right diet, you’ll feel a whole lot better, say experts.
“While food alone may not completely reverse PCOS, consuming certain types of foods may prevent harmful side-effects, such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension, in the future,” says Dr Nithiya Palaniappan, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist.
So, what should a woman diagnosed with PCOS eat?
Green leafy vegetables are a must as they slow down sugar absorption. “The phytochemicals, vitamins, and antioxidants in leafy vegetables are antiinflammatory and help with the acne that could be secondary to PCOS,” says Dr Palaniappan. Oats are an excellent source of complex carbs. “Routine consumption of oats can lower cholesterol and help in weight loss,” says Dr Palaniappan. Women with PCOS are often diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency. So, intake of foods rich in Vitamin D, such as fish eggs, and milk, is advisable along with supplements for Vitamin D,” says Dr Usha Bohra, obstetrician and gynecologist.
The high water, fibre, and vitamin C content in tomatoes is especially good for ladies suffering from acne. “Walnuts and almonds help balance the female hormones (hormonal imbalance is the hallmark of PCOS),” says Dr Palaniappan. This in turn will reduce acne, hair fall, and facial hair which are a significant features of PCOS. “Regular consumption of green tea will help in stimulating metabolism, which is slow in PCOS patients. This, along with dietary changes and exercise, could help in weight loss,” says Dr Palaniappan.
